Every once in a while, a horse comes along with a story that feels like a fairytale—and Tator Chip, lovingly known as “Chip,” is exactly that kind of pony.
Now 12 years old, Chip wasn’t always the picture of health and elegance he is today. When Holly Tabor found him eight years ago, he was in heartbreaking condition—skinny, sickly, and standing at a stockyard with an uncertain future. But Holly and her daughter, Hannah, saw something special in him. They took him home, poured their hearts into nursing him back to health, and in doing so, changed all of their lives.
Genetic testing later revealed Chip’s unique makeup—a mix of Turkoman, Holsteiner, and Arabian. True to his lineage, he carries himself with both grace and grit.
Under the early guidance of trainer Lara Hart, Hannah began working with Chip, and together they built an impressive eventing career. Chip’s heart and athleticism shone in every stride. More recently, Holly took over the reins, transitioning Chip to dressage. With the expert coaching of Dona Roth of DWR Dressage in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Holly and Chip began a new chapter—one that would lead them to win the National Dressage Pony Cup at the World Equestrian Center in Ohio, competing at Training Level 3.
It’s clear that Chip’s success isn’t just due to his talent—it’s also his temperament. During his portrait session, he was one of the kindest and most cooperative horses I’ve ever had the pleasure to photograph. His eyes carry a softness that speaks volumes about his gentle soul. You can tell he simply wants to please.
Chip’s story is a beautiful reminder that with love, patience, and belief, even the most unlikely beginnings can lead to extraordinary legacies.
