Some horse stories begin in the show ring, but Maribeth’s began on the back of an old mule.
At just five years old, she would ride her grandfather’s mule with nothing more than a bridle—no saddle, no fear—just a little girl falling in love with the rhythm of hoofbeats and the magic of connection. That first ride sparked a lifelong horse dream she carried quietly for decades.
Life carried her in many directions over the years, but in July 2022, everything changed. Maribeth received a breast cancer diagnosis. It was a moment that shifted her perspective and reminded her that dreams should never wait for “someday.”
Between chemo treatments, she made a decision—now was the time to make her dream a reality. In November 2022, she purchased Rosie, an 18-year-old dark bay Warmblood mare in Dahlonega, Georgia, through Lexi Russell. Even in the midst of her battle, Rosie became more than just a horse—she became a heart horse, a source of joy, and a precious gift.
Maribeth had been taking riding lessons in Tennessee for three years before finding Rosie. Together, they now train at Port Royal Equine Center in Adams, TN, under the direction of trainer Michelle Candady. Her goal is simple yet deeply meaningful—compete in at least one horse show and have a wonderful time doing it.
For Maribeth, it’s not about ribbons or points. Her dream is to grow tougher, become a more confident rider, and enjoy every moment in the saddle. “Rosie is the best gift ever,” she says. “She’s my reminder to live each day fully.”
When she’s not at the barn, Maribeth teaches the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant program at Northwest’s Health Science Academy—a role she’s proudly held for 13 years. She’s a mother of three and grandmother of four, and she treasures every ride with Rosie as part of her healing and joy.
From inspiring horse stories to unforgettable horse and rider bonds, Maribeth’s journey is a reminder that the perfect time to pursue your passion is always now.
