Ice — The OTTB Who Became a Dressage Star (and a Best Friend)

Some horses come into your life disguised as something else entirely. For one client, that horse was Ice — a 16.1 hand chestnut off-track Thoroughbred who was supposed to be a "team pick" for a competition. He ended up being so much more.

 

A lifelong love of horses

"I was always a horse-obsessed kid, and lessons followed soon after." About 15 years into riding now, this client credits family and riding instructor Kimberly Wallace as the biggest influences along the way.

Meet Ice

Boarded at Fairhaven Farm in Rome, GA, Ice is 13 years old, 16.1 hands, and — in his Kendal's words — "a spoiled rotten angel baby brat who knows exactly what he can get away with, and knows he can con anyone out of treats with his sweet baby face."

How they found each other

Seven years ago, this client went looking at off-track Thoroughbreds for the 2020 Retired Racehorse Project Makeover, searching for a "team horse." "What I didn't know was that I was actually picking out my own horse for myself."

Together they compete in dressage, with results to show for it:

  • 2025 GDCTA Reserve Champion, Adult Amateur Training Level
  • 2025 USDF All Breeds Adult Amateur Award, 3rd Place Training Level
  • 2025 USDF Area III Regional Top 10, Adult Amateur Training Level
  • 2020 Thoroughbred Makeover, 3rd Place Adult Amateur Training Level

Why now?
"As he's getting older, and you never know where life will lead, I wanted beautiful photography of us together to keep forever."

As his rider puts it: "He is most definitely the best horse anybody could possibly ask for."
