Every once in a while, a horse comes along who feels like he stepped right out of a storybook. Te-Amo is one of those horses.
Photographed in Bowling Green, Kentucky, this black background equine session was one I won’t soon forget. With soulful eyes, a gentle heart, and a presence that practically whispered “look closer,” Te-Amo was a dream to capture in fine art.
Te-Amo’s story began in Bowie, Texas, where Nancy Orr’s trainer, Steve Kutie, discovered him tied to a fence at a horse show. At the time, no one realized just how talented he truly was—not even his owners. But Steve saw something special and brought him to Nancy. After a two-month lease, she knew in her heart he wasn’t just any horse—he was her horse.
.
She purchased him as a stallion and later had him gelded, but his spirit remained unchanged: steady, kind, and deeply connected to the humans around him.
With his nearly solid white coat and long, flowing white mane, Te-Amo looks like he galloped straight out of a fairytale. His beauty is undeniable—regal yet approachable, with an elegance that made every frame feel like a work of art. He truly is the picture-perfect horse, inside and out.
Te-Amo is an Azteca gelding estimated to be around 15 or 16 years old, and he has been with Nancy for seven of those years. Despite his uncertain beginnings, he’s proven to be an exceptional dressage partner—currently training at Western Ag Center under the guidance of DWR Dressage and Dona Ruth in Bowling Green, KY.
On the day I photographed him, Nancy had just competed in her very first dressage show—and won 1st place at the Intro level. It was such a joy to see that kind of full-circle moment, where hard work, love, and trust pay off in such a meaningful way.
Nancy says he is simply perfect. And after meeting him, I can’t disagree.
Black background portraits are about so much more than the horse’s appearance—they’re about honoring who they are and what they mean to us. Te-Amo’s session is now part of a growing collection of fine art equine portraits that transform beloved horses into timeless, heirloom artwork.
If you have a horse like Te-Amo—a horse who’s changed your life—let’s create something worthy of their story.
