Dreams, Legacy, and Horses: Friesian & Andalusian Portraits in Tennessee

 A Father–Son Legacy in Horses

Every so often, a session reminds me why I love what I do—and this was one of those times.

Meet Alam and his father, two horsemen whose bond is as timeless as the horses they love. Together, they share not only a passion for riding but also a story woven with dreams, patience, and legacy.

Gavilan – The Smokey Black Friesian

Alam’s horse, Gavilan, is an 8-year-old, 16-hand Friesian gelding with the most breathtaking, flowing mane you’ve ever seen. Regal and powerful, Gavilan carries that unmistakable Friesian presence that turns heads the moment he steps into view. Capturing his elegant frame against a fine-art backdrop was nothing short of magical.

When I asked Alam what he loves most about owning horses, his answer was simple and profound: “They’re a good therapy session—they force you not to worry about anything else.” For him, time with Gavilan means a chance to trail ride, enjoy pleasure rides, and even visit favorite spots like Percy Werner Park.

Tizoc – The Andalusian of a Lifetime

For Alam’s father, a dream more than four decades in the making has finally come true. Since childhood, he had always longed for a grey Andalusian—and now, forty years later, he proudly owns Tizoc, a stunning 8-year-old Andalusian stud. With his noble build and silvery coat, Tizoc looks like he has galloped straight out of a fairytale. Photographing him felt like documenting not just a horse, but a lifetime dream fulfilled.

When I asked what makes Tizoc special, Alam’s father smiled and shared: “He has so much personality. Gavilan and Tizoc are complete opposites, but they compliment each other in the best ways.”

Over the last five years, they’ve built not just partnerships, but true relationships with these horses. They’ve tried different disciplines and situations, learning lessons in horsemanship, patience, and even tough love along the way. That journey itself is the accomplishment they are most proud of—because it’s not just about training or showing, it’s about the bond that grows deeper with time.

 A Christmas Surprise

What makes this story even more special? Alam is surprising his father this Christmas with a beautiful wall portrait of Tizoc—a gift that will hang proudly in their home for generations to come. It’s a secret for now (so shh—don’t tell or share this with him just yet!), but I can already imagine the look on his father’s face when he unwraps this piece of art that celebrates his dream come true.

Why I Love What I Do

Sessions like this are the heart of my work: capturing not just the beauty of horses, but also the stories, the bonds, and the emotions that make them family. Every portrait becomes more than an image—it becomes a legacy piece that tells a chapter of someone’s life.

To Alam and his father—thank you for trusting me to preserve this incredible season in your story. Gavilan and Tizoc will forever have a place in your hearts, and now, on your walls as well.
